For $40, this is a pretty solid cubicle! There is no doubt about that.
But at the same time, do NOT expect some high quality finish or expect this to put in your fancy den or library in home. It just isn't up to that level of quality.
FIRST thing to point out, is that the backing on the 4 cubicles is CARDBOARD. I got Black Ash color. Basically I got 4 pieces of black square cardboard, and I NAILED the cardboard to the back of the cubicle in a staggered pattern. If that doesn't yell "cheap", I don't know what else will.
Also, the laminate on my black shelf was imperfect. I actually had to take a black Sharpie and "fill in" parts that were imperfect. Luckily, it's barely noticeable.
Overall, it is a nice sturdy shelf for $40. And with appropriate colorful basket accessories, can help make your room look nicer.
If I could ask to improve the product, I would ask that there be provided 8 cardboard squares for each shelf. Some people just do not like the staggered look. Also, what if I wanted to use it just for all books? Kind of weird how some would be in a nice cubicle with a back, while others might fall out if I push them too far. That and the quality are pretty much my only complaints.
Closetmaid has lots of interesting looking furnishings, but if everything is this level of quality, I fear that Closetmaid is mostly an affordable option, with no premium offerings.
