Broken J Hooks
Just J
Aug 6, 2014
The system was already installed when I moved in. It has been about 4 years and one day I walked into my closet and all my clothes were on the floor. The front of the closet rod support had broken. I glued it with super glue and monster glue, but I am now replacing the closet rod support. As others have suggested designing it to be stronger, by maybe adding a metal clip at the end..

J Hooks Breakdown
Weak J Hooks
Jun 23, 2014
I have used this system at 2 different houses and really liked it until half my closet came crashing down at 3 Am this morning. On inspecting the remaining J hooks I found at least 2 with the front clip in that breaks off with a fingertip of pressure. A redesign of that front clip area to account for aging/brittleness of the resin should be part of ClosetMaids quality control process.

I have had three of these things break which left my clothes in a pile on the floor! Definitely not made well and not cheap to replace. Really disappointed because I have these in every closet in my house and my pantry!

These plastic hooks should have a metal core!

Like many people that have reviewed this product, I have had MANY rods fall due to a single J-hook breaking. It is extremely frustrating!! It seems to me that the problem could be easily resolved by simply adding a metal core to the hook. While this might add to the cost, for those of us that have them in every closet in our house, it would certainly be a relief. If I ever build another house, you can be sure that I will never use Closetmaid products in any of my closets!

I love the system for oraganixzation, but ther wer some drawbacks. It took a long time to install in an old house with plaster with metal lath in the walls. The screws hung up on the metal. But once installed it last for a few years until I went in late one night to find 2 J brackets had broken and the rod was bowed in t he middle. I had to go to the basement to find some strong wire to use until I could replace them. I had four on a 10 foot span (every 30 inches). I guess I will buy more and maybe reinforce with wire.

Should last longer

In general I really love this system, and the J-brackets were easy to install and use. But, like the other reviewers I was dismayed when I walked into the closet and a whole rod of clothes had fallen down because one bracket broke where it attaches. Of course, the place where I originally bought the system no longer carries it and I thought I was going to have to do a lot of replacing. Fortunately I found this online source and ordered extras!.

Please upgrade J brackets
Southern mom
Dec 9, 2013
My house is 11 years old and 2 J brackets just broke. We stole 2 from a short rod to last until I could get replacements. I was thrilled to find them online and also to find the ones to upgrade the shelves with 12 inch spacers. The hangers will then slide 36inches. Of course, we will have to also buy rods for those closets. The builder saved a few pennies by installing the less expensive ones in the 2nd,3rd, and 4th bedrooms and the coat closet.

Good but..

Good but make sure to add more than you think you need. Ended up with every one of them cracked in a walk-in. I was shocked the closet held. Redoing an old closet and will be sure to use even more extras this time. I do like that the fact that it does allow the hangers to slide freely. Would be good if it was metal skeleton with plastic modeling around it.

Time to Redesign
LA
Nov 5, 2013
I really like the closet system but I'm disappointed in the J-Bracket; I opened my closet to find the rod and all my clothes had fallen due to the J-bracket breaking. The front part of the top of the bracket that goes over the shelf wiring snapped off on two of the brackets. As others have stated, the bracket spacing was less than 36" and shelving properly installed. I think its time to get the engineers working on a fix to this weak link in the system.

I put in the ClosetMaid system throughout my house when we moved in Feb, 2004. My wife's walk-in closet was loaded and my closet was filled as well. All of the closets in the other three bedrooms have the system as well. The coat closets were packed with High-country Colorado winter coats. I sold the house in 2013 and never experienced a problem with the "J-hooks." However, I did space them at 32" rather than 36" and had no youth in the house that may have misused the closet systems.

Support Can be Beautiful

First purchased this product when I was expecting my first. Easy to install/use. Now he's grown and the brackets just broke for the first time! And its only the brackets, the rest of the closet is still as good as ever! Given that both my husband and I are large people, the load they supported for years was extremely heavy at times. The closet was also boiling in summer, freezing in winter. Yet they held up without a complaint. And the clean lines make the closet look great as well.

I also have had the brackets break, and they were installed correctly. When I installed the Closet Main System I even bought extra of these, just so they wouldn't break. But it has taken about 6 years and they seem to be wearing out. Which they were made out of metal.

These lasted 3 years - properly installed - not sure what the weight limit is and should be listed for future knowledge - however - my clothes aren't overly heavy and coats were not on this 36" rod ... both supports snapped at the top where they fit into the shelving unit. Happened when no one was home so assume one went and the other followed ... Now I've got a pile of clothing with no where to put them until i find replacement... VERY disappointed ... didn't plan to have to do this repair right now.
